Standards Based Global Education Updates
Global Education Meets Common Core
Global education doesn't mean throwing out existing lessons or standards. Rather, a teacher can make strategic changes to lessons in complete alignment with Common Core. See below for some examples of globalized lesson modifications for Common Core Standards in English/Language Arts.
Reading for InformationCCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.7.9
Analyze how two or more authors writing about the same topic shape their presentations of key information by emphasizing different evidence or advancing different interpretations of facts. Integrating Global Education 1. Introduce nonfiction selections from the United States and other countries that reflect diverse settings and perspectives. 2. Integrate online tools to access articles and blog posts about current events and issues written from a non-American perspective. Lesson Plan Modifications Global Competency: Investigate the World Use online tools such as Newsela and Online Newspapers to research diverse perspectives in nonfiction. Global Competency: Recognize Perspectives Compare news stories written about the same event in different newspapers around the world. What do the authors emphasize? How does the vocabulary differ? What is left out of each story? Global Competency: Take Action Design a global service learning experience based upon an issue presented in a nonfiction article. Outcome Assessment 1. Create a Prezi comparing perspectives in two articles about the same topic written by authors in different countries. 2. Create a series of blog posts from the point of view of a person affected by a global issue, using facts from nonfiction sources. 3. Participate in a debate highlighting different perspectives on a global issue, supporting opinions with facts derived from nonfiction sources. |
Reading LiteratureCCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.7.3
Analyze how particular elements of a story or drama interact (e.g., how setting
shapes the characters or plot).
Integrating Global Education 1. Include a wide range of literature from both the United States and other countries that reflects diversity in author and setting. 2. Use diverse literature to make comparisons between different cultures, finding similarities and differences as reflected in the literature. Lesson Plan Modifications Global Competency: Investigate the World Read folktales set in a variety of different cultures to determine how cultural setting shapes character and plot. Global Competency: Recognize Perspectives Compare a Shakespearean play from an excerpt of a play set in Africa, Asia, or South America, focusing on how the play’s setting affects the characters and action. Outcome Assessment 1. Write a response citing evidence that compares two folktales set in different cultures, focusing on how the setting of the folktale shapes the events of the story. 2. After reading several folktales, create an original folktale set in another culture, using the unique aspects of that culture to demonstrate how setting affects characters and plot. 3. Perform two scenes from plays set in different parts of the world, emphasizing how the settings of those plays shape the characters. |

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.7.1 Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 7 topics, texts, and issues, building on others' ideas and expressing their own clearly. Integrating Global Education 1. Arrange for partnerships with classes in other countries, using technology if possible. 2. Use flexible grouping to maximize students’ interactions with people from other cultural backgrounds. 3. Conduct Socratic Seminars on topics of global significance. Lesson Plan Modifications Global Competency: Communicate Ideas Participate in a Socratic Seminar after reading several articles about global sustainability, discussing inferences and opinions in a respectful, additive manner. Global Competency: Communicate Ideas Prepare for a cross-cultural exchange with a class in another country by learning about their cultural communication norms, and investigating best ways to share ideas. Global Competency: Recognize Perspectives Include texts offering an international perspective during a literature circle discussion. Outcome Assessment 1. Self-evaluate participation in a Socratic Seminar on a global issue by completing a written reflection of personal strengths, lessons learned, and opportunities for future investigation. 2. Send helpful video feedback to a student in another country following a Skype discussion of a global issue. 3. Collaborate with others to design a final product (poster or presentation) summarizing an international text. |
